I am grateful to be awarded the Union Student Leader Scholarship for demonstrating the valuable qualities of being a student leader. As a first-generation college student in a family of immigrants, I often did not have the means to be in spaces of advocacy or know how to access resources/opportunities available to me. Driven by the purpose of community solidarity, I found the means to influence change and to uplift those around me along the way. This scholarship will support me in completing my senior year and realizing academic achievements. I aim to add my perspectives and contributions to the field of law and national social advocacy efforts.

Cultural Differences

Our Utah Asia Campus

The U Asia campus is an amazing asset at the University of Utah that not many students happen to know about. This past year, I had the opportunity to travel to Incheon, South Korea, and study at the U Asia Campus for a summer. During these three months, I was able to travel the country, make lots of friends, and take 13 credits to obtain a minor in Information Systems. Because of COVID-19, mine and the experiences of my classmates were unlike any other, but that didn’t stop us from having an unforgettable summer. Starting with a two- week quarantine and filled with extra surprises around each corner, this learning abroad experience helped me learn to be resilient throughout constant change.

In addition, transportation around Songdo and all over Korea was one of the easiest parts of my time learning abroad. I was able to travel practically anywhere with just a bus and subway pass!

U Asia Campus Perks

The U Asia Campus has many perks unique to Korea and the campus itself, which I was lucky to experience during the summer. Along with smaller class sizes, there was emphasis on individual students, which helped me get the assistance I needed from faculty when I needed it. There were lots of on campus events, and a lot of them focused on international students like me! It was a great place to learn about other student’s cultures and make lots of friends. I spent a lot of time on campus because of the great atmosphere, and ended up meeting a ton of amazing people! Everyone on campus was so nice and happy to help me when I needed directions, translations, or anything else. Besides on campus perks, the town in which the campus is located had many amazing benefits, especially for students. Songdo is one of the safest cities in Korea, it was almost a shock coming back to the US!

Having never traveled anywhere in Asia before, I had no idea what to expect. Sometimes it can be difficult to travel somewhere new without knowledge of the language or culture. Personally, I like to do research before I go somewhere to make sure I am following cultural morals and being polite. It is super important to keep an open mind and respect people and their own beliefs while traveling. I noticed especially that everyone I met in South Korea was very polite and followed the rules. South Korea puts an emphasis on respecting their elders and words will even change to reflect that if one is speaking to someone older than them. Another form of respect that is practiced in Korea is in the form of payment to a vendor or cashier. It is expected to hand your payment with two hands simultaneously. Habits like these have stuck with me, and I still find myself doing this when paying for things in America. Was it worth it? Yes. I got the opportunity to travel safely during COVID-19, gain a minor in information systems in a country that is highly advanced in technology, and become immersed in a new culture, ease of transportation and travel. I will remember my summer at the U Asia Campus for the rest of my life. I was so lucky to have the opportunity to live outside of my comfort zone, experience Korean culture, and make lasting relationships. The time that I spent at the Utah Asia Campus was one of my favorite experiences in college so far, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to travel or learn abroad!

Why You Should Join Honors

By: Ava Peitz, Honors Student Advisory Committee Chair

The Honors College provides a liberal arts college experience to motivated and engaged students at the University of Utah. At such a behemoth of a university that is highly focused on research, business, and athletics, the Honors College allows for a highly customized experience, providing an opportunity for students to grow and change their worldview in alignment with their shifting values. One of the best parts about joining the Honors College is the opportunities one has to build connections with similarly engaged students, passionate faculty, and diverse members of our world society through curricular and extracurricular experiences. Through Intellectual Traditions courses, Praxis Labs, and small learning communities, students are encouraged to embrace challenges, explore multiple perspectives, and venture out to find a place in the world. I, myself, have had many uniquely transformative experiences within the college, in conjunction with my biochemistry and psychology degrees. Without the college, I wouldn’t have been able to experience a class entirely based around Live Action Roleplay of past millennia, or learn all about the oral and written traditions of different African cultures. The Student Life Center provides students with a healthy outlet outside of academics. Within the Student Life Center you can find The Summit, Crimson Lagoon, Legacy Gym, and so much more. It is more than just a gym - it offers students fitness classes, the Shake Shack, and rental gear for any outdoor activities. As a student, I like to maintain a healthy balance between school, work, and extracurriculars. Throughout my freshman year, I used the Student Life Center as a way to take care of my body and mind. The University of Utah offers a plethora of resources for its students. The campus is surrounded by lush mountains that allow students to pursue any number of activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and skiing. On campus, several unique buildings help support all majors and interests students have, whether that be academic or otherwise. One such building that many students turn to is the George S. Eccles Student Life Center. thene of the Best The TStudent he Student Life LCenter ife Center 1850

The Student Life Center also gives us a chance to venture outside of the campus and explore all the opportunities Utah offers us. Students can use this space on campus to learn how to healthily balance their lives and explore new hobbies they may not have found without the Student Life Center. The University of Utah prides itself on having well rounded students and it is through providing us services like these that they further enhance our experiences. The Mighty Utah Student Section (widely known as “The MUSS”) is a place where the University of Utah’s most avid supporters come together to cheer on our wide variety of talented student athletes. The student section at the University of Utah is involved with almost all sports at the university, especially football, basketball, and gymnastics. The MUSS currently holds the highest claim to fame in the world of collegiate student sections, having recently been awarded with the “Live Mas Student Section of the Year” by Taco Bell. The MUSS is also known to travel with our beloved teams, often banding together on what is aptly nicknamed “The MUSS Bus”. Just this year, a group of MUSS members were able to travel down to cheer on Utah Football at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Students in all walks at the University of Utah are welcome and encouraged to join the MUSS in cheering on the Utah Utes, whether or not they consider themselves huge sports fanatics. Students already invested in Utah Athletics have found a home among other supporters, and those who may be new will surely find a newfound love for the sports they choose to attend. There’s something for everyone in the Mighty Utah Student Section, and all are sure to walk away with some amazing friends and memories.

Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) here at the University of Utah is over 100 years old and has 13 fraternities and 8 sororities. These organizations form a community of nearly 1,800 students with various academic interests. No matter what you are studying, you probably won't go a day without seeing a member of the FSL community representing their organization on campus. One place you often see members wearing their letters is the library. Each organization has academic expectations and support systems. They must also meet certain criteria to remain in good standing as part of the FSL community. Members of the FSL community are engaged on campus not only as students and members of their organization, but as leaders at the University as well. FSL members are involved in ASUU, the Union Programming Council, the Bennion Center, the Center for Student Wellness as well as being RA's, TA's, and orientation leaders just to name a few. In addition to the work done on campus, the FSL community prides itself in supporting others through service and philanthropic e orts. Over 5,900 service hours and fundraising of more than $250,000 were reported in the Spring 2022 semester alone. These funds go to causes including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Big Brothers Big BeingSisters.inafraternity or sorority is an amazing opportunity for members to find somewhere they belong. Members are immersed in a supportive community where they can grow into the person they want to be. It is a fantastic way to network, be involved, and learn valuable life skills. University Traditions are very important to the U and its students. We take pride in all the traditions that U of U students have done for decades. Our traditions are incorporated through our academics, sports, organizations, and our alumni. Every year, the university holds a Traditions Week during the spring that celebrates our traditions and everything they do for our school.

The Student Alumni Board puts together University Traditions week and keeps the significance and impact of our traditions through our students. The Student Alumni Board incorporates events and activities throughout not only our Traditions Week but through the entire year. We do activities with students to get them to think about all our traditions and the memories that were made from them as well as to keep up our school spirit. We recognize our students and alumni as well with fun events and giveaways. Our traditions have a lot of meaning behind them and have a di erent way of impacting each student. Whether it’s taking pictures at the Block U, going crazy for the third down jump at our football games, or lighting up the U, each one has made an unforgettable memory in our students' college experience. The “Utah Fight Song'' is a tradition that is carried throughout all parts of campus and is sung at a variety of events at the U. It really incorporates a lot about the U and what it means to, in the end, graduate as a Ute. At the U, it doesn’t matter your major or where you’re from, our traditions are a huge reason why our students can come together and be a part of something bigger than themselves.

It’s not just snowboarding - it’s GOOD, powdery snowboarding on the best snow on the earth. Now you’re here on this campus with so many opportunities to fall in love with outdoor recreation. Don’t know where to start? Make a friend on campus who has some experience, take a PRT class, join a club, or sign up for a trip with Outdoor Adventures. There’s a vast world out there - go explore it! When the snow melts away, I transfer my time and energy into rock climbing. This is a hobby I picked up rst at the Summit in the Student Life Center on campus. At rst, it was a great way to socialize. There are so many students who fall in love with climbing on this campus and are willing to share that love and knowledge with their peers. My freshman year, going to the indoor climbing wall meant befriending strangers while working on hard climbing routes. Over time, I expanded my horizons and became more committed to the sport itself. I fell in love with the problem solving aspect and the pure elation when nally nishing a tricky route.

One of my favorite things to do outside is to snowboard. I’m from a family with generations of skiers, so this hobby was a little more inherent than some others that I’ve picked up recently. The fact that I can use big gaps in between classes to drive up to a ski resort and do a couple laps is something I strongly doubt many other students around the country can say.

The University of Utah o ers an unparalleled opportunity to get outside and explore the outdoors. We are all so lucky to have chosen a home with such proximity to towering mountains and beautiful valleys of red rock. I’m a native Utahn - born and raised. I came here already knowing the outdoors and what they had to o er, but my college experience has opened my mind and widened my outdoor hobbies in a way that I never could have imagined. In the first semester of my freshman year, I reached out to the FeedU food pantry, located in the basement of the Union. The pantry provides food and hygiene supplies at no cost to University of Utah students, faculty, and staff. Keeping the pantry organized, documenting donations, and connecting pantry patrons to necessary food supplies are the responsibilities of my position. The pantry is flexible in commitment level based on position, and I have volunteered one to two hours per week since starting my education at the U.

In the spring of my freshman year, I began training as a crisis counselor for a hotline focused on suicide prevention among LGBTQ+ youth. Fully remote, the 40-hour training and subsequent volunteering provided me skills in de-escalation, collaborative problem-solving, and fast-paced decision making. Working three hours weekly for this textline has been rewarding, despite being the most emotionally difficult volunteering I have ever done. Organizations that have virtual text-based volunteering opportunities like this one include the Trevor Project, Crisis Text Line, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, and Exhale.

A Guide to College Volunteering

Finally, in the summer following my freshman year of college, I began volunteering with Kesem. Camp Kesem is a free-of-cost summer camp for children affected by a parent’s cancer. As a camp counselor, I spent my time helping kids have fun in an environment where they felt heard. Getting involved with the newly formed chapter of Kesem at the University of Utah has helped me make friends, feel fulfilled in my service, and grow an organization that I believe in.

SPONSOREDBYCAMPUSSTORE CAMPUSRESOURCES CAMPUSSTORE.UTAH.EDU

Volunteering experiences at the U are plentiful, and organizations such as the Bennion Center can help students get involved with various organizations such as the local VA hospital, the Special Olympics at the U, or hospice volunteering. I’m excited that my volunteering experiences are relevant and meaningful to my values and future career, and I look forward to the remainder of my undergraduate experience hallmarked by my positive interactions within my community.

When I started my freshman year, I wanted to get involved; this was easier said than done in the middle of a pandemic. But volunteering opportunities are abundant if you know where to look. During my two years on campus, I have been involved with several volunteer-based positions, all of which have strongly supplemented my experience at the University of Utah.

Want sushi that makes you feel like you are on the coast? Ichiban is the place for you! They have multiple locations but this one is definitely the best!

For a more upscale dining experience, Stone Ground has awesome Italian food. The secret is to go on Sundays for their “all you can eat” pasta and pizza.

This is like a “we’ve been hanging out long enough you can see me eat ugly” type of place. The burgers are mammoth with a thirst-clenching flavor, the buns homemade, and the meat juicy and fresh—their burgers don’t mess around! Sorry not sorry to the youngsters—it’s a 21 and older place! There’s nothing more satisfying than a juicy burger (above) with a cold beer.

Let’s be honest—when it comes to food, you shouldn’t mess around. Eating is more than just satisfying hunger but having an experience with the people you go with! So stop going to the same old restaurants you always go to and try something new!

Thai food anyone? If you haven’t had Thai food before this is the place to go! The food has an incredible flavor for both spice lovers and haters. Haters gonna hate but you won’t be hatin’ Sawadee once you go! The portions are huge so there are always leftovers and who doesn’t love leftovers, especially when the leftovers still taste delicious!

In no particular order... Ruth’s Diner: 4160 Emigration Canyon Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84108 Classic. Ruth’s Diner has been around since the 1930s serving food 8am-10pm 7 days a week! Go back in time to this one-of-a-kind diner but make sure you go early; this hidden gem in Emigration Canyon fills up quickly! Make sure to try one of Ruth’s favorites!

Ichiban Sushi: 336 400 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

Stone Ground: 249 E 400 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

The Pie Pizzeria: 1320 E 200 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

Bombay House: 2731 Parleys Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84109

CAMPUS DINING74 Try some SLC Favorites!

Wanna pizza me? Giant pizza served with a heart attack, this greasy pizza is a campus favorite and a classic University of Utah experience! The Pie Pizzeria is not only a filling experience but is where the term Freshmen 15 came from, if you catch my drift.

Lucky 13: 135 W 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84115

Sawadee Thai Restaurant: 754 S Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

Are you game for spicy food? Spice up your digestive system with some Indian food! Go to an authentic Indian restaurant with five-star food and service! Bombay is hidden by the Walmart on Foothill Dr. (yes, a 24-hour Walmart hidden on Foothill Dr.)

Ain’t no thang like a chicken wing! Take a friend, a special someone or someone you know will pay and grab yourself some awesome wings with “out of this world”, I can’t even, flavor.

Wasatch Brew Pub: 2110 Highland Dr.

Once again, sorry you youngsters, their award-winning beers are only for 21 and older.

Dolcetti Gelato: 902 E 900 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84105

Wing Coop: 3971 Wasatch Blvd, Salt Lake City, UT 84124

Located downtown in Salt Lake, we have the brewery favorite Squatters! They have been serving delicous food and handcrafted beer since 1989.

Don’t stop at dinner! It’s time for dessert! Hang out at 9th and 9th and grab some gelato! They have many unique flavors; my personal favorite is their white wine gelato! Yum!

Ruby Snap Cookies: 770 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101 WTF (What the frosting)?! Frosting on a cookie? Why didn’t I think of that! Oh snap! It’s a tiny shop on 3rd West. Don’t worry you can also get their cookie dough at Harmon’s grocery stores, It doesn’t include their icing and what’s a cookie without icing? Make sure to checkout their store and get a sample before deciding what cookies you want to get! I’m a sucker for their Mia Squatters:cookie.147W. Broadway. Salt Lake City, UT 84101

Crimson View: 200 S Central Campus Dr. (aka the Union!)

If you’re smart, you would have recognized that this address is on campus. Yes, a sit down lunch restaurant on our campus (also available for catered events in the evening)! On the top floor of the Union building, have yourself a little getaway from school and eat! As an additional plus, meal plan flex dollars are accepted here. Sometimes the best things are right where U are!

Coming to Utah from Milwaukee in the early 80's, Greg Schirf could not seem to find great beer or breweries here. Greg then decided to solve his problem and start his own brewery!

The Tragedy of Waste

The system that contributes most to this phenomenon is the linear model we use to discard waste. Oftentimes our economy employs raw materials, processes them into a product, and then immediately discards it. There is only a faint notion of recyclability, of resourcefulness. Why can’t the product become an input to a production factory? Given to communities in need? A robbed shelf life increases the individual ecological footprint of items while decreasing the respect attributed to them. By assigning practicality and resourcefulness to the products around us, we increase their value, gaining a newfound sense of appreciation. Only with this sentiment can we begin to treasure finite resources and start to reform destructive structures. However, before we can create change in our systems of consumption, we need to have these conversations with ourselves and the individuals around us. Trends start in the home, through interpersonal conversations, before they become systematic. Unless we alter how we think and interact with the products and resources around us, little change can occur from the outside. The University of Utah has excellent resources to explore this, including the Food Recovery Network, which diverts tobe-wasted food and donates to individuals in need. In addition, Salt Lake City houses Clever Octopus, a creative reuse center designed to create art out of used products. As we grow a collective knowledge of the significance of resources around us, we can slowly change the tragedy of waste, little by little.

Waste. A simple word that has become a harsh reality of the near-apocalyptic world we currently live in. It’s the reason Americans feel unsatisfied with the promised utility of endless consumption, yet generate 140 million tons of trash every year. Despite the sheer incomprehensibility of this number, it isn’t necessarily trash that’s the issue. It’s the fact that our first instinct is to throw it away.

Once on top though, it feels like being on top of the world and justifiably so as Mount Nebo is the highest peak in the Wasatch range. The best part of hiking is that it is free and open to anyone! There are hikes of all skill levels all with plenty of beautiful views and scenery. It’s a great, stress relieving exercise everyone should take advantage of, especially since the mountains live right in our backyard.

WHERE YOU NEED TO HIKE BY PRESTON BATH

A more avid adventurer might prefer my favorite hike I’ve done in Utah: Mount Nebo. This hike is not for the faint of heart as it is a grueling 9 mile round trip. The elevation gain is just north of 3,500 feet with the summit being 11,877 feet. The trek up to the top starts off fairly easy with rolling hills for about 1.5-2 miles. There are two main sections of big elevation gain, the first being encountered at about the 2 mile mark and the second around 3.2 miles in. The end of the hike includes about a half mile of scrambling up loose shale.

The mountains are definitely the biggest advantage to living in Utah. A twenty minute drive can buy you plenty of great experiences. For me it has given me so many unforgettable views and memories with great people. My favorite hike around the Salt Lake Valley is Bell’s Canyon. The best time for this is between the last week of May and mid-June. By this time the snow has melted off the trail and the river is rushing. The city also just built a new parking lot right at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon with plenty of parking and lighting in case you get an early or late start. The hike itself is not too challenging; there is only a semi-steep incline with many rocks scattered about near the end. The hike concludes with a beautiful waterfall on one side and a wonderful view of the valley on the other.

By: Tammie Tan that put on ski events and give huge discounts for season passes.

Ski culture is so awesome here at the U. When I got to college, I decided to put more e ort into snowboarding. This absolutely changed my life. I fell in love with the sport, met so many people, and made some lifelong friends. I always have people to carpool up the mountain with, regardless of the day of the week since lots of students get season passes. If you’re unsure what pass to get, I recommend the IKON pass. My personal favorite resort is Brighton. It has become my second home during the winter seasons. For my whole life, I have lived in Utah. I was lucky to have parents that took me skiing as I was growing up. I enjoyed skiing, but it was never something I was ecstatic over doing.

Once I attended the University of Utah, I met so many people that came to school here because of skiing and snowboarding. Students ranged from those who wanted to learn, to those wanting to continue their passion. These people I met made me realize that I’m incredibly fortunate to have the mountains in my backyard. Utah is home to some of the best skiing in the world. Furthermore, the U is within 30 minutes from 7 di erent ski resorts that with terrain perfect for all skiers and snowboarders. The U does a great job with providing the resources and opportunities to ski and board.

There are classes for students to learn avalanche safety and even take them on ski backpacking trips. Students can rent all the gear they need for cheap from the Outdoor Adventure rental shop. There are also ski clubs, such as Freeskier Society and One Love, students can join Ski and Snowboard Culture at the U

College is a place that brings people together from many different financial backgrounds. Some students work many hours during the school year to help pay for college, some students can avoid working and focus solely on academics, and some students may be in a completely different category altogether. I cannot claim to be a financial guru or anything near that. However, I have learned a few things about finance during my time at college that I can share to help students of all financial backgrounds.

List of financial resources:

Besides making money, and on the other side of things, there are many great resources on-campus to help save money. When it comes to food and hygiene products, there is a food pantry in the Union basement free to anyone with a valid U-Card. Free transportation is also provided through Trax and campus buses. And if you’re just looking for general financial advice, then there is also a financial wellness center that provides financial counseling to students.

When it comes to getting a job during the school year to help pay for school, I recommend first looking for an on-campus job. I have been lucky enough to work at the Student Life Center. The convenience behind working for the Student Life Center is that they are willing to work around my class schedule and the schedules of other student employees, just as other on-campus jobs will. The Student Life Center simply creates a weekly schedule around my classes and allows me to work the same shifts every week.

I would highly encourage all students to take advantage of the many great resources located on our campus!
