Traditions
The Union, which is the center of all non-academic activities, is the student clubhouse and office building. The center was built for student administration, publications, and other organizations. The Union is meant to be an escape for students from their stressful studies. There are many lounges for relaxation, games rooms for entertainment, meeting rooms to do extra group studying, and a cafeteria for a delicious meal. These activities and services have been with the Union from the beginning and will continue for ages to come.
School dances, recitals, and concerts held in the Union Ballroom have always been a favorite pastime. Though dances are now held elsewhere, students used to flock to the large dance floor on Homecoming night to meet new friends and swing dance the night away.
The ladies could always be found with a paper and pen, being it tradition to write down the name of the lucky gent that asked her to dance.
Students that weren't delinquent in university work were allowed the use of game rooms where billiards and cards could be played. Today pool tables can also be found at the Union, along with arcade games, ping-pong, and a bowling alley.
Beautifully appointed lounges with sofas and chairs scattered about for relaxation and socializing has always been provided for students. Back in the 40's and 50's, each lounge was equipped with a piano and a radio, and paintings by Utah artists adorn the walls.
Students loved to take advantage of the fully equipped theater that was used for student recitals, conventions, and productions. Here they could enjoy plays put on by students, University groups, or off-campus organizations.
The Union has always prided itself with providing great food at low prices. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily. Food service for banquets, parties and organization lunches have always been available through the Union.
Clubs have always been an important part of the University of Utah. These groups give students an opportunity to express themselves and their talents. The Union has been an integral part in their success. Most club organizations can be found at the Union and activities are often held in the many rooms or lounges of the Union building.
